ArcheoParc in the Schnals Valley

What did grain look like in ancient times, which woods were used, which herbs and berries were gathered? What were the houses like in Ötzi the Iceman’s time? Back in time, the ArcheoParc provides insights into the heritage of past ages, when the Iceman lived. The park sheds light on the Neolithic Age. Information under Archeoparc Schnals, at telephone number + 39 0473 676020.

Ötzi Express

In just 6 minutes, the Schnalstaler Gletscherbahnen brings you into the middle of an impressive high mountain world at 3,200 meters. With a tracked vehicle (Ötzi-Express) participants are introduced to completely new views and insights. With specialist and experienced guides you can view icefalls and glacial moraines. The high point of this round trip is certainly the visit to a unique glacier cave. Trips daily at around 11.30 from the end of June to the middle of October starting at the mountain station on the Schnalstaler glacier.

Care centre for avian fauna at Schloß Tirol

On a wonderfully laid-out nature trail integrated into the landscape, the visitor is initiated into the fascinating life of predatory birds as important links in the natural cycle. The task of the centre is to take in birds which are found helpless or injured, nurse them back to health and then release them back into the wild. Should this no longer be possible, the station provides the creatures with a new home. Accessible daily, except on Mondays. Flight shows: April – November: around 11:15 and 15:15, November to March: around 15:00.

Churburg Schluderns

Castle from the year 1259. Interior in Renaissance style. Largest private armoury in Europe, in the private ownership of the Dukes of Trapp since 1504. Renaissance arcade passage with family tree of the Dukes of Trapp. The Bishop of Chur, Heinrich IV von Montfort, was, on the victorious completion of a feud against the Protectors of Matsch, conceded on the basis of an arbitration decision from 27th February 1253 the right: \"…at a place of choosing… from Cleven to near Latsch … to build free of hindrance a castle or fortress…\". We first meet the name of the castle in a document that Bishop Heinrich issued on the 21st of February 1259 in \"Curberch\". The name and location of the castle at the entrance into the Matsch valley, in which the reeves of Matsch had their family seat, make it a certainty that the Churburg is the castle that the Bishop had shortly before been permitted to build \"free of hindrance\".

Aquaprad

The National Park House is situated in the heart of Prad on the Stilfserjoch, and invites you to a nature experience of a special kind. Variously constructed aquariums enable exploration of the close, yet so foreign world of water and the indigenous fish. Experience fish in an unusual manner: through large panorama windows in the basement to the open-air pond, in a stroking basin or in a further 12 aquariums. Residing in the 15-meter-long descending brook aquarium are the typical local fish species, from char to marbled trout. Interactive facilities offer additional information about streams, moors and forest. The exhibition \"In the realm of King Ortler\" on the first upper floor is dedicated to the national park itself and presents the distinctions of the region. \"Nature forms Nature\" takes up the subjects of geology and the assimilation strategies of plants and animals. \"Nature forms People\" concentrates on the philosophy of the national park: it looks into the future and, especially for young people, propagates a new, closer-to-nature philosophy. \"People for Nature\" stands for coping with nature in both senses: naturally-adapted economics on the one hand and survival with the natural resources of a pastoral, pre-industrial world on the other.

The Bletterbach

The Bletterbach – a canyon, not as well known as its “Big Brother” in America but definitely just as worth seeing. In this geologically fascinating gorge you can experience the development and creation of the Dolomites “live” – prettier than in any schoolbook. This is because when the Aldein region still stood on the coast, or even a bit under the sea (about 200 million years ago), corals, mussels and Bellerophon snails grew on our main attraction, on the Bletterbach canyon.

It’s an unforgettable experience, walking along the bottom of the river bed as 20 metre high walls of porphyry tower up above you to the right and left. A stroll through this almost ghostly canyon is not just something for geologists, but is also a great natural history experience for every nature lover.
