The climate in South Tyrol
The South Tyrol climate varies depending on the soil formation. In the mountainous valleys the climate is predominantly Alpine, with heavy snowfall. The valleys which open to the south, such as the Etsch and Eisack valleys, have central European conditions. This means that the climate in these valleys is milder and more Mediterranean, since the mountains shelter them from the cold northerly winds. The winters tend to be milder in the southerly valleys and the summers hotter than in the localities situated further north. The mean annual temperature in the north (Sterzing, 948 m) stands at 6° C., in Pustertal (Bruneck, 835 m) it is around 6.3° C., whereas moving eastwards it gets colder (Innichen, 4.7° C.) The west of the region, Valvenosia, is the region with the lowest precipitation in the eastern Alps. At higher altitudes the climate tends to be Alpine, while at lower altitudes the climate is Mediterranean. Schlanders reaches an annual average temperature of 9° C., Merano 11.5° C. and Bolzano 11.7° C.
Naturns is situated at an altitude of 554 metres, 13 km distant from the spa town of Merano. In Naturns the sun smiles down on you on average 315 days a year, making Naturns one of the regions in the eastern Alps with the most sunshine and the least precipitation.
So leave your umbrella at home – you can be quite sure you won’t need it!
In the Meraner Land and in Valvenosia there are several meteorological recording stations that measure low precipitation of less than 500 millimetres – statistics similar to some parts of Sicily, for instance. In other neighbouring valleys, such as in Passeiertal or in the Venter Tal, precipitation levels of double or triple these amounts are recorded.
