Meraner Land

The Meraner Land (Burggrafenamt or Burgraviato) is not only the classic and oldest holiday destination in South Tyrol; it is also the heart of Tyrol in the historical sense. Merano was for centuries the centre of the princely county of Tyrol, seat and capital of the rulers, until in 1446 – after the lineage of Tyrolean counts died out – when the seat was moved to Innsbruck. A great many buildings date back to these splendid times, mainly castles, residences and palaces which have survived three centuries and which provide a rich adornment to our South Tyrolean heartland. The region surrounding Merano is called Burggrafenamt, or Burgraviato in Italian, as the spa and its immediate vicinity has the highest density of mighty and splendid castles in Europe (Schloss Schenna, Schloss Tirol, Schloss Lebenberg Tscherms, Schloss Juval, Schloss Hochnaturns, Schloss Dornsberg Naturns, Landesfürstliche Burg, Brunnenburg).

However, it is not just castles which particularly characterise this area; there are a great number of cultural sights worth visiting all over the Meraner Land: Little churches and chapels with precious frescoes, carved wooden altars from the Gothic period, museums and collections, monuments, exhibitions, which reflect the development of the local culture.

You will be enchanted by the magic of the Meraner Land!
