Ötzi – The man that came from the ice

More than 5,000 years ago a man went up into the icy heights of the Schnastaler glacier and died. In 1991 he was found by coincidence, together with his clothing and equipment, mummified and frozen – an archaeological sensation and a unique snapshot of a person from the Chalcolithic age. Following many investigations by highly specialised research teams, the mummy and its accompaniments have been open to the public in the South Tyrolean Museum for archaeology since March 1998.
For the first time in the history of medicine and archaeology anatomical studies were carried out on this naturally-mummified body clearly dating back to the 4th millennium B.C. The body is practically unscathed apart from damage to the left hip area. With the aid of modern techniques anatomical characteristics and pathological changes could be diagnosed. The results of the investigations are presented in the museum in the form of multimedia stations, videos and diagrams. The place where the ice man "Ötzi" was found is only 6 kilometres from Naturns. – ArcheoParc Schnals
