The gardens of Trauttmansdorff castle.
The blossoming gardens of Trauttmansdorff castle stretch out on the sunny slope above Meran/Merano. The enchanted castle is enthroned in the middle of the gardens. In about 1850 the count of Trauttmansdorff had these mediaeval ruins rebuilt; empress Sissi stayed there twice for winter treatment. The Touriseum, the museum for tourism, can now be found in the castle. It tells the story of 200 years of adventures in South Tyrolean tourism history.
More than 100,000 plants, including 3,000 different varieties, were previously planted in the four garden areas: the sungarden, the water- and terrace garden, the forest garden and the South Tyrolean landscapes. A botanical trip around the world in 11 stages with the following attractions: A grotto with multimedia show on the origins of the plants, geological mosaic as a walk-in stone world of Tyrol, an orchid house, a Japanese garden, 11 pavilions designed by artists.
